Why I Read (and Write) Short Reads

Why I Read (and Write) Short Reads

As a manager in the IT industry, I’m continuously aware that time is a precious gift and I must manage it well. I must find the right balance between my life, work, personal and professional development.
When my daughter was born, I decided to change my daily routine to enable me be a part of her childhood as much as possible while watching her grow up.

Okay, sounds good but how?

As a baby step, I decided to spend no more than an hour a day to improve my soft skills.

I like quick results and fast turnarounds while learning, so I love short but engaging yet effective management books. I can finish such books in 2-3 days, getting into a conclusion without keeping them on my bookshelf as half-read books with a lion cub bookmark in the middle. I also love the feel of accomplishment when I read the last words of a book. Don’t get me wrong, time by time, I feel the inner need to read a lengthy book but that’s just too rare.

I believe that short-reads provide the right balance to support my professional and personal development but in the meantime, gives me enough time to focus on other important parts of my life.

That’s why I read and write short reads. Give it a try.

The Beauty of Life

The Beauty of Life

Life isn’t always something that seems stereotypically beautiful – there isn’t always sunshine and it isn’t always easy. The beauty of life lies in that fact, though. Life is beautiful because it’s ever-changing, it’s difficult, and most importantly, it’s finite.

The definition of life states, “A condition that distinguishes humans and plants from inorganic matter, including the capacity for growth, reproduction, functional activity, and continual change preceding death.” The definition reminds us that we are living, functional, beings that are capable of growing, producing life, and changing before we stop living. Let’s talk about that a little more.

The definition states that growth is increasing amount, value, or importance. There are a few different ways that life allows us to grow – mentally, physically, and emotionally. How incredible is it that we have the capacity to grow our minds, our bodies, and our emotional responses to stimulants we encounter every day? We have the ability to foster our own growth, write our own stories, and break our own molds.

Although our lives are finite, meaning that they have limits or bounds, we have the ability to produce more life. Being alive and able to reproduce is beautiful because we extend our legacies. Two people can create another living being and bring it into the world as another living being. We fill the world with parts of ourselves to make life even more beautiful. We share our existence with others, we find love in eachother, and we expand life with eachother.

Having the ability to adapt to the situations we’re faced with is another beautiful part of living. We can change our physical appearance, our attitudes, our jobs. We can change majors, where we live, and who we spend our time with. We have the mental capacity to evaluate our situation and make necessary changes to increase our own happiness. Change is inevitable but living allows us to adapt to it.

Some see death as the opposite of living, and in some ways it is. However, to remind you that life is a beautiful thing – try to look at death as part of life. If we all lived and functioned forever, what beauty would we see in the time we’re given. What care would we take of our bodies or of our world? There is beauty and excitement in things that will not last forever – an appreciation like no other. Death should be appreciated and valued as much as the life we live before it should be.

The definition of life should remind us that it’s beautiful. It’s a state of being that is unique outside of our planet (that we know of). It’s characterized by difficult times. We’re prone to illness, greed, and war. However, we are special, unique, and most importantly – we’re alive.

Why I Love Good Reads: The Benefits of Reading

Why I Love Good Reads: The Benefits of Reading

There’s nothing I love more when I have free time than sitting back with a good book. I can read for hours and hours given the chance. Whether it’s an action-packed novel that has me on the edge of my seat in suspense or an autobiography. You name it, I’ll read it.
Why do I love reading so much? I’ll tell you.

1. Reading is good for your health

Losing yourself in a fictional world is a great way to shut out your worries for a little while. And that’s good for you! It beats stress, and we all know how tough stress can be.

And all of that escapism can boost your mood, meaning improved mental health.

And finally, reading gives your brain a workout. And keeping your mind strong and active improves cognition and even reduces the risk of dementia in old age.

2. It’s inspiring

A lot of us can get stuck living out the same routine day in day out. Reading allows you to transport yourself away from your everyday reality. It shakes things up and alters your thinking.

The more you read, the more you learn. And knowledge is power.

Books open your mind up to new possibilities and can inspire you to make changes to your real life. A lot of the world’s most successful people credit a specific book as the source of inspiration or motivation.

3. It can improve your problem-solving skills

Problem-solving often requires creativity. And that is something that reading sparks inside all of us.

It also provides a break from the overthinking and overanalyzing that can lead us round in circles when it comes to solving life’s problems.

I’m sure I’m not the first person you’ve heard advocating for taking a break from a problem you’re stuck on and coming back to it with fresh eyes later. Well not only will picking up a book take your mind away from your worries allowing you that break. But it will also ignite your creative juices, so when you come back to your problem, all of that outside the box thinking will become easier.

4. It can help you to grow as a person

It can be tough to understand and tolerate things we don’t know anything about sometimes. We often live in our own little bubble without experiencing a lot of the issues that exist in the world.

Thanks to the power of books, we can gain some insight (even if we can never truly understand) into a whole new world of issues we would otherwise remain ignorant of.

Reading about a subject even a little bit can help you to expand your horizons, open your mind, and grow into an all around more understanding person.

5. It can increase intelligence

Studies into children found that not only do people that read frequently have more extensive vocabularies but they score higher on general intelligence tests too. Reading literally makes you smarter.

What We Can Learn From Successful People like Og Mandino

What We Can Learn From Successful People like Og Mandino

Today we are going to delve into what it takes to be successful like Og Mandino. Something that we should put out there is we cannot guarantee success. What we are going to do is give you a framework that should help increase the odds of attaining success but the only certainties in life are death and taxes!

Don’t Be Ordinary

If you want to be extraordinary then you have to do things differently than everyone else. While some people are born wealthy that does not mean you cannot achieve success but you will need to put in the extra effort. This effort has to be focused in areas that will have a direct and tangible impact on your ultimate goal which is success.

Clearly Defining What Success Means to You

In order to reach your goals, you must clearly define them. Success means different things to different individuals so you have to figure out what it would mean to you. The next question is to ask yourself why you want to reach this goal, is it to impress other people or you are doing this for yourself? There is no right or wrong answer but if you are doing something to impress other people you could end up regretting it or not being able to put in the total effort needed to reach your goal.

Getting the Right Type of Help

When you have made the commitment to move forward and work towards your goal the next thing that you will need to do is seek out people who can help you. It would be impractical to think you can do it all on your own. You will need to surround yourself with a team of people who will help you, this team should have complimentary skills so you can focus on your strengths.

Preparing for Adversity

Success requires a huge amount of effort, you will need to overcome adversity at each and every stop along the way. This tenacity is what will give you the motivation needed to stick with your dream even when things seem like they are falling apart. Circling back to our point about doing this goal for yourself and no-one else otherwise you will quit when things get tough.

Celebrating Milestones

This is a vital item if an individual wants to reach their goals in life. These milestones will provide inspiration and motivation when an individual is feeling tired or discouraged. By setting mini-targets an individual can see progress and that should keep them pushing forward towards their dreams.

All of the qualities are displayed by successful individuals like Og Mandino and you can harness your full potential, it comes down to a matter of desire and effort.

How to Rebuild Your Self-Esteem After You Lost Your Job

Losing a job can be a real hit to the ego. Though, there are those who are excited about losing one maybe not in the financial aspect but in the aspect that it wasn’t a great place to work, and it might have been hindering them from either being great, or even feeling comfortable in their workplace. But if you are in that first category and your self-confidence is shot, there are some ways to pick yourself back up and regain that feeling of being ‘useful’ again by going back to work or at least just feeling good in general. Let’s get you back on your feet to feeling like your old self again, but even better also.

Forget the Past

We cannot change the past, it’s already done and there is nothing you can do about it now. Take a day or two and fester, dare to be sad, but then stop looking at what you could have or should have done better and look towards the present and what you can do now. While you are looking at new jobs and are home, you have the opportunity to hang out with the family and do some things (within financial constraints of course) that you want to do. Maybe take the time off to volunteer someplace that you don’t have the opportunity to do on a regular basis. But the premise of it is this, don’t fret about what happened and don’t assume you know the future. Do what you can now, in the moment, and the rest will follow.

Finding a Job is Now Your Job

Instead of sitting around all day doing nothing and wallowing in self pity, you can treat getting your new job like a job itself. And you should. First, it will keep your mind off of the past and looking towards the future and secondly, it will help you get back on your feet. If you treat it like it’s your regular 9-5, finding something should be relatively easy.

Take Care of You

You can no longer say you have no time to work out. Working out boosts those feel good chemicals in the brain and help you focus. Plus, you can go to your new job as a whole new person. It’s amazing what a little bit of working out can do for a person. But, working out is not the only thing, you just want to do things that make you feel good, even if it’s working on that honey-do list or projects that you have wanted to do for a while, as long as it makes you happy, go for it.

These are brief ways to feel better after you lose the job that you thought you would be at for the rest of your life (if that was the case). There are many other ways to boost your self-esteem but the basis of it would be to take care of yourself first, forget the negatives that happened in the past and go from there. Your confidence will be back in no time.

How a Minor Habit Change Can Improve Your Self-Esteem Significantly

How a Minor Habit Change Can Improve Your Self-Esteem Significantly

If you are struggling with your self-esteem, you may be trying to find the best way to build yourself up. You may think that to significantly improve your self-esteem, you have to completely change your life and who you are. The fact is that people can improve their self-esteem by making simple and minor changes to your everyday life. These little things can add up quickly and the next thing that you know, you will be shocked at how confident you are feeling.

What is the best habit that you can change? The one where you are always criticizing yourself is the first place that you need to start. This is a minor change that can easily be made by replacing the negative with a positive. For instance, maybe you are particularly sensitive about how your nose looks. You always notice it and criticize it in the mirror, bringing yourself down. Instead, try thinking about something that you love about yourself, such as your smile. Every time you look in the mirror, mention about how great your smile is. Eventually you will forget about how much you don’t like your nose and build up your self-confidence. This is just one example.

Nobody is perfect. You need to learn to love your imperfections if you are ever going to have any self-confidence. If you are constantly striving to be perfect, you are never going to be happy. Instead, appreciate what you have achieved and who you are now. You should keep a journal where you write down everything that you have achieved in your life and everything that you love about your life. Whenever you feel as though you need to work towards being a perfect person because you feel like you are missing something in your life, you should look at this journal to realize that you are awesome.

It also can be very helpful to set realistic expectations for yourself. It can be very easy to say that you are going to have a family and own a home by 30 years old, but this is not always a reasonable expectation. If you hit this milestone without achieving these things, you will feel negatively about yourself. Accept what you have accomplished up until this point and learn from whatever mistakes that you may have made in the past that may have held you back from your dreams.

All of these things are seemingly minor habits that we have that greatly impact our daily lives. These minor habits can be changed if you work at it. It can take a bit of work and patience, but your life will be infinitely better if you do. Having a high level of self-esteem is going to change your life. It will ensure that you achieve your goals and help you to hold your head up high whenever you are walking around. You will feel unstoppable when you have a lot of self-confidence.
